Pressure cookers are closed units that do not allow escape of air when they are cooking food. This style of cooking food is in a league of its own. Pressure cookers are typically made of stainless steel or aluminum. Nowadays, these pots for cooking are much less dangerous to use than they used to be. In its earlier days, pressure cookers weren’t manufactured with safety measures. In this time, pressure cookers were known for exploding and causing damage to people’s skin. Although the previous types were dangerous, the ones nowadays are built with the following features:

* Handles – A longer handle on one end of the unit where the lid is closed and a small handle on the opposite side make it very safe to handle the cooker. Because of this feature, there is a reduced risk of burns when lifting the pot. A longer handle will be much cooler than the shorter due to the increased distance from fire.

* Locking system – Usually, the cover of the cooker is pushed into place and then locked tightly. This feature eliminates the possibility of the lid coming off while cooking due to the pressure. The top and rim of the base section keep the lid interlocked so the lid cannot open from pressure. Safety lid locks are a good feature, where the unit will not start cooking if the lid is not shut tight; this mechanism is typically put in place by the simple press of a button.

* Weights – Older model cookers used to jiggle when pressure built up. Nowadays, top weights are attached on the lids of the unit to reduce the rattle. Also, a movable dial feature or rising valve stem is typically included with the pressure cooker. These parts eliminate the escape of moisture from the food. In case of too much pressure, the built up pressure is safely channelized through a series of secondary stems and valves on the pot.

* Metals – A stainless steel cooker is great for cooking all kinds of food as stainless steal doesn’t react with acid ingredients from things like tomatoes. Stainless steel cookers can be safely used on any surface. They can also be used inside the grill or put right onto a flame when camping. Also, a metal spoon is good to use in a stainless steel pressure cooker as they don’t scratch or discolor the cooker. Moreover, stainless steel pressure cookers will live forever without rusting out or coming apart.

* Pop up pressure indicator – Pop up pressure indicators show when the wanted pressure setting has been reached. This feature eliminates guesswork and accurately displays the cooker’s pressure.

These cookers have come a long way since earlier models. Nowadays, all people are familiar with pressure cookers and sometimes use them for cooking meals. Many individuals use these cookers during holidays and other celebrations. And, some people use them often to feed their family. Either way, pressure cooking is an effective way to cook.
