Select Bamboo Flooring To Have A Natural Floor

Many of the options are made from petroleum products and those that are not are made by destroying forests that have taken a hundred years to grow. Bamboo flooring is a natural flooring material that does not destroy rain forests, one hundred year old trees or depend on petroleum products. Is is just as durable as hardwood flooring but the plants mature in just over three years.

At three years bamboo reaches its maturity. The plants can be cut and used for flooring anytime after it matures; however most manufacturers prefer four to six year old plants and some manufacturers do not recommend purchasing bamboo flooring from plants that are less than four years of age. Once the stalks are cut from the roots, new shoots readily appear and will once again grow to maturity. Since the roots are not disturbed, the there is less chance for erosion of the soil and the moisture reservoir is maintained.

Bamboo stalks that are harvested for flooring are four to six inches in diameter. These stalks are cut into long pieces that can be trimmed and glued in order to form the durable flooring.

Bamboo can be used in its natural color, but is also responds to bleaching using hydrogen peroxide and baking produced a dark rich coloration. In addition, it will accept some staining before finishing. Although the heat treated bamboo flooring is often beautiful, the process of heating the product tends to cause it to be less durable than bamboo that is not heated. Heat treated bamboo is only 90 percent as durable as the untreated bamboo, and if the material is overheated, it loses even more strength and durability. The most durable flooring is not heated and horizontal grain bamboo.

Since bamboo is a natural product, you do need to take care of the floor. Avoid high heels as they can permanently dent the flooring. You will also want to have mats at the doors to avoid tracking in dirt and grime that can sand away the finish and cause your floor to lose its brilliant finish.

Unlike some hardwoods, bamboo is naturally water resistant. This make care even easier. The floor will need to be swept regularly and mopped about once per week to keep it looking great.

Although bamboo is very hard, it has the flex that is needed to be easier on the legs. After a day working on bamboo floors, you will not have the exhausted feeling you do when working on concrete or tile floors. Bamboo can even be installed in kitchens or bathrooms.

There are some bamboo flooring that cannot be installed as a floating floor. If you need a floating floor, be sure that you talk with the retailer before purchasing flooring. In addition, you will want to avoid some of the inexpensive bamboo flooring that is being imported as it is often made of immature bamboo which is not as durable as the mature plant.
