When it comes to outdoor activities, there are few things that are less expensive and more fun than skateboarding. When it comes down to it, all you really need is a good skateboard. There are countless accessories available too, but these are optional. If you have a good skateboard, the whole world is a skate park.
Skateboards, as we know them today, have been on sale since the ’50s. Skateboard design has developed a bit since then, but not really that dramatically. The overall design has stayed unchanged – four wheels and a deck.
Deck – This is the flat board that you stand on. They are most often made from narrow layers of maple, but can also be made from other substances. Normally a deck will be approximately 10 inches wide and 30 inches in length. Most decks have kicktails at both ends which allow the board to be easily kicked up off the ground, which aids in tricks and jumps. The deck’s surface will usually be covered by a high-grip finish.
Trucks – These attach the wheels and the deck of the board. They consist of two parts. The baseplate is attached to the deck. The hanger holds the axle and , in addition, aids in the steering of the board. The hanger should be adjustable to make turning the skateboard easier or more difficult.
Wheels – Board wheels come in a range of sizes and varying levels of hardness, depending on the needs of the boarder. For example, larger wheels provide greater speeds, while smaller wheels have a lower center of gravity and can be better for jumps and stunts.
These are the parts that make up a basic skateboard and, when it comes down to it, that is all you need. However, skateboarding is a lot more than a hobby, it is a whole sub-culture and has all the accessories that go with it.
At the more practical end, there is a massive selection of safety gear that is a good idea when learning the ropes or for boarders attempting riskier jumps and tricks. A strong helmet and knee and elbow guards can save you from a lot of unnecessary pain.
There are all kinds of add-ons to help you ‘pimp your skateboard’. These include nose and tail guards, and rails and lappers. The bottom of skateboards often have intricate graphics, while there are also lines of garments, shades and other fashion items aimed specifically at skateboarders.
While skateboarding is usually thought of as a sport or a hobby, many enthusiasts promote it as a green form of getting around. That said, skateboarding on streets and sidewalks is illegal in many areas because of the belief that it is excessively dangerous as a means of transport. In truth, injuries are usually minor when they do take place.
As sports go, skateboarding is definitely one of the cheapest around. For as little as $75 you can find a good board that will, most likely, last you for years.
